Jeanette Ashe

Biography

Dr. Jeanette Ashe (PhD Birkbeck, University of London) is political science faculty at Douglas College (B.C.) and a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, King’s College London. Her research centers on political recruitment and gender quotas, with a focus on gender- and diversity-sensitive parliaments. She is the author of Political Candidate Selection: Who Wins, Who Loses and Under-representation in the UK (Routledge). Her articles appear in journals such as the Canadian Journal of Political Science, Party Politics, and British Politics, and she writes for public audiences in outlets including Policy Options, The Conversation, and National Newswatch. She advises parliaments, governments, parties, and NGOs on gender equity policy and democratic reform, and has written multiple reports and toolkits for legislatures, including the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s Gender Sensitising Parliament: A Seven-Step Field Guide. She has run provincially and municipally in B.C. Current projects include advancing gender- and diversity-sensitive reforms and a national effort to promote legislated gender quotas. Forthcoming work includes chapters on feminist critical actors in the B.C. Legislature during COVID-19 and on making Parliament a more inclusive workplace. She is also a member of the International Research Network on Gender Equality Policy in Practice.
