Sarah Ghabrial

Biography

"I am a historian of modern global legal history with a focus on the Maghreb under French occupation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. My archival researched has centred on
Algerian judicial records; subsequent publications have dealt with encounters between pre-colonial and colonial legal orders; transformations in gender organization through the globalization of law; race, law, and states of exception; and the genealogy of border regimes. My work has appeared in the Journal of Middle East Women's Studies; French Politics, Culture and Society; Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East; and, most recently, the Law and History Review. My forthcoming book explores the evolution of Islamic legal
'modernity' through the interactions, confluences, and conflicts between state and non-state law
in Algeria between 1870 and 1930."
